If you have difficulty with lactose but want to ensure you are getting the calcium you need, consider one of these non-dairy sources of natural calcium.

  1. Canned seafood, such as sardines and salmon, can be a good source of calcium. These inexpensive options actually contain more calcium than their fresh counterparts. Canned seafood contains small, soft, edible bones that are generally unnoticeable but can be a great way to add calcium to a salad or other dish.
  2. Calcium-fortified juices are available in both orange and cranberry varieties. These juices taste the same as non-fortified options, but contain a substantial amount of calcium. Check the label to ensure it is a calcium-fortified juice.
  3. Soy, rice, and almond milks offer added calcium and can be used as a milk substitute for many dishes. Experiment with different varieties to determine which flavor you like the most for each use. Try one of these milk alternatives on cereal or use in a cooked dish in place of regular milk. Soy, rice, and almond milks are available in a variety of flavors, including plain, sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla, and other options.
  4. Beans are a calcium-rich food. Black-eyed peas and baked beans are particularly high in calcium.
  5. Green vegetables are a good source of natural calcium. Collard, mustard, turnip, and dandelion greens, Chinese cabbage, spinach, kale, okra, and broccoli are all great choices for adding calcium to your diet.
  6. Nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, or Brazil nuts are strong sources of calcium. Flaxseeds and sunflower seeds are a great snack or salad additive with calcium. Almond butter, cashew butter, and pumpkin seed butter are a fun and calcium-rich alternative to peanut butter.
  7. Breakfast cereals are highly fortified with several vitamins and minerals, including calcium. Old-fashioned rolled oatmeal adds calcium to your breakfast as well.

We may recommend a topical fluoride application for your child’s teeth as part of their preventive treatment. Topical fluoride is used to strengthen enamel and make teeth more resistant to tooth decay.

Sealants are also highly effective in preventing tooth decay and cavities on your child’s molars and premolars. These areas are the most susceptible to cavities due to the anatomized grooves. Typically, children should get sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth come in. These sealants can protect the teeth through the cavity-prone years of ages 6 to 14.

The process of applying sealants is quick and easy. The application steps include:

  • Your child’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned
  • The teeth are dried
  • A liquid solution is put on the chewing surfaces of the teeth
  • The solution is cured using a special curing light

Sealants act as a barrier to protect the enamel from plaque and acids. They may last for several years before reapplication is needed. So long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay.

However, sealants are not a substitute for brushing your teeth. It is important to have your child maintain proper oral hygiene and continue to follow up with professional dental cleanings as recommended by our dental team. In addition, sealants do not protect between the teeth, so it is essential that your child continues to floss daily.

Have fun with snacks. Promote a nutritious diet by getting creative with snack choices. If you show your kids that healthy snacks are fun, they will be more likely to eat them. Apple slices with peanut butter, fruit smoothies, and yogurt with granola or fruit are great examples of fun, yet healthy combinations. Remember to avoid soda and sugary drinks. These can leave sugars on teeth and can increase the risk of plaque and tooth decay. Water is always the best solution! Eating a well-balanced lunch and dinner is important as well. If you brush and floss after meals and snacks, your kids will follow the example. Consider brushing together with your child to reinforce good brushing skills and habits. Care of Your New Crown and the Surrounding Tooth Structure

With consistent, effective oral hygiene care your new crown and the supporting tooth structure can remain healthy for many years.
However, there are many risk factors that can lead to deterioration of the tooth structure that is at the margin (junction of tooth and crown) of your crown:
*Sugary, sticky foods
*Beverages with sugar or high acidity. Most beverages, plain herbal tea and coffee included, have acidity to cause loss of minerals from your teeth. Milk is not acidic. Tap water is best. Adding lemon to your water makes it acidic which is usually harmful to your teeth.
*Inadequate, inconsistent oral hygiene:

1. After eating or drinking, swish several times immediately with tap water. If available, swish for one minute with a fluoride rinse such as ACT Fluoride Rinse. It is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes after eating and/or drinking, to brush your teeth.

2. Abrasive toothpastes, especially tartar control and whitening, can be harsh on your enamel. However, all toothpastes and gels can remove tooth structure especially on your root surfaces. Root surfaces are half the hardness of enamel. What is recommended is to floss first, then brush with water only to remove your plaque and food. Then use a small amount of toothpaste (preferably Pronamel, Sensodyne or Arm & Hammer toothpastes are a lot less abrasive than Crest/Colgate/Aquafresh) and brush lightly.

*Dry mouth – lack of adequate saliva is one of the most significant risk factors in developing cavities. Drink plenty of tap water. The recommended amount of water to drink is half of your body weight, i.e. 140 lb person should drink 70 ounces water which is about 8 ½ glasses!

*Many medications can weaken the teeth. Inhalers for asthma are highly acidic. Many medications have the side effect of reducing your saliva. If you feel thirsty, you are probably 50% dehydrated!

*Fluoride is highly beneficial to your teeth at any age. We recommend to use a prescription remineralizing toothpaste at night which is available here. An in-office fluoride treatment is very beneficial as it loads up the fluoride reservoir within the sub layer of your teeth. An over the counter fluoride rinse (ACT, Crest Complete Care, Listerine Total Care) is also recommended for daytime use.

When periodontal disease is not treated in a timely manner, it may become periodontitis. Periodontitis is the most advanced form of periodontal disease. With periodontitis, gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating small “pockets” along the gumline. These spaces are highly difficult to clean without professional intervention and can lead to rapid worsening in overall oral health. Without prompt and thorough treatment, bone, gums, and soft tissues may be destroyed by periodontitis. One of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults is periodontal disease.

Some of the most common factors that contribute to periodontal disease developing include poor oral hygiene habits, diabetes, smoking, and female hormonal changes. Some medications can cause gum tissue to develop abnormal tissues, which can increase difficulty in proper cleaning of the teeth. People who are receiving treatment for AIDS are also at increased risk of developing periodontal disease.
